WHAT IS ENOTECA AFTER ALL?
Puneites will have the opportunity to learn more about wine at a series of gourmet meals at local restaurants over the next couple of weekends
In Italy a wine shop that offers customers a chance to taste wine and learn more about their provenance is known as an ‘enoteca’. Small quantities of wine are sold at a reasonable fee, allowing customers to decide which they might like to buy at a later date. Many of them also serve a choice of snacks that goes with the wine. Seagram’s Nine Hills and DNA in association with the Pune Gourmet Club (PGC) are bringing the Enoteca experience to Pune through three wine dinners over the next couple of weeks.
“These are part of a series of six dinners, three of which took place in December 2009 as a run up to the 3rd annual Pune Wine Tasting Festival organised by PGC,” says Nilesh Kale of PGC. “The concluding three wine dinners will take place over the next two weekends at three restaurants that will re-create the Enoteca experience, offering perfectly paired food and wine for everyone to enjoy. The cuisines will range from Italian to Continental fusion to Indian and grilled food, accompanied by wine from Nine Hills. The wine dinners will also feature brief informal sessions on wine appreciation. A winemaker from Nine Hills will also be attending the evening for those interested in discussions on a one-to-one basis. The idea is to create a memorable evening with good food and great wine in an informal, fun and educative atmosphere.”
Adds Darius Chirgur, Country Manager (Wine) of Seagram’s, “An Enoteca is more like a ‘wine library’ where a visitor or tourist can source information about wines in the area. In a similar vein, apart from serving our wines, including Nine Hills Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, Rose, Shiraz, and Cabernet Sauvignon, we will provide diners a chance to learn more about them. We are also pleased to be able to introduce wine enthusiasts to our Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon Reserves. The Reserve Shiraz won the Gold Medal at the recently held Sommelier India Wine Challenge.”
The first of these Enoteca experiences will be held at TRETTULIA in Koregaon Park on 20th March 2010, Saturday. The restaurant is putting on an Indo-European-fusion spread featuring Mini Quiches of Ham and Meats, Wedges In Rosemary Rub, Honey Sesame Chicken Kebab, Hummus Pitta with Olive Oil (starters); Lasagna with Mince Chicken, Risotto with Grilled Peppers, Lamb Ragout with Brown Rice, Zucchini-Mushroom Pasta in Rich Tomato Sauce (main course); and Apple and Cinnamon Pie, Walnut ‘n Cream Cheese Brownie (dessert).
